West Bromwich Albion 0-2 Liverpool

est Brom were relegated from the Barclays Premier League as Liverpool took a stranglehold on second place.

Albion needed to beat the Merseysiders in order to have any hope of avoiding the drop and they began brightly only to fall behind following a disastrous defensive error.

Shelton Martis was caught in possession by Steven Gerrard who ran through to beat Dean Kiely on 28 minutes.

Marc-Antoine Fortune missed a good chance to level moments before Dirk Kuyt fired the second into the bottom right corner from 20 yards on 63 minutes.

Luke Moore hit a post 14 minutes from time with Fortune then heading over. Fortune had a goal disallowed for offside as Albion kept fighting to the death before finally becoming the first team this season to be relegated from the top flight while Liverpool took a six-point lead over Chelsea in the race for second place.
